A Visit to Barrel Harbor Brewing Company- Vista
On the way back from a recent craft beer road trip to Orange County I stopped in at Barrel Harbor Brewing in Vista. It was a warm Saturday evening and the big roll-up door out back was open to cool the brewery. A small band was playing inside and their fun music drifted outside to greet me.
Once inside I was welcomed by smiling bar staff and presented with a menu of fresh brews on tap. After chatting for a few minutes about their beers and my preferences, it was recommended I sample the Fenris IPA (7.3% ABV/70 IBUs). It was a good recommendation.
A friendly Pomeranian was nearby, watching my every move. Dogs, live music, and people happily playing games: This is a fun place to hang out and drink fresh craft beer.
The taste of Fenris was divine, so I ordered a pint. Barrel Harbor describes this beer as a “tropical west coast-style IPA.” Here is a summary of my tasting notes:
Golden color, clear, nice white head. Aroma and flavor are similarly tropical- pineapple, peach, mango, and grapefruit- with a pleasant bitterness. Mouthfeel is slightly creamy, low-medium carbonation, with a smooth finish and surprisingly, no bite. Overall, this is a balanced IPA that refreshes and is quite pleasant to drink. I find it unique in the sea of San Diego County IPAs and look forward to drinking another fresh one at the brewery.
