ARCANA Brewing Company- Carlsbad
If you are looking for a small brewery in north San Diego County with some unusual but tasty beers, this is the place.
I usually order a full pint when I’m out tasting beers, but the menu at Arcana Brewing had some interesting and mysterious brews listed.
So I ordered a flight of four tasters consisting of:
- Bourbon Barrel Voyager (ESB)
- Newton’s Graff Apple Ale (unfiltered wheat-based apple beer with cinnamon)
- SD Saigeson (aka San Diego Sage Saison, made with California Sage and Sagebrush, plus coriander, orange peel, and sweet potatoes)
- Olde Ingles Smoked Ale (smoked, barrel aged English Old Ale)
All four of these beers were tasty, but I enjoyed SD Saigeson (6.5 ABV/15 IBUs) the most. It won a Bronze Medal at the 2015 San Diego International Beer Festival. Here is my description of it:
Color reminds me of clear, apple cider. It has a pretty white head floating on top. Aromatic with scents of earth, sage, coriander, and citrus; all are soft, pleasant, and balanced. Medium sweetness, with subtle sage, spice, and orange flavors. Mouthfeel is creamy and finishes clean. Overall, a delicious Saison with interesting aromas and flavors that I would order again.
Arcana Brewing has an interesting steampunk theme and whimsical, but very friendly vibe. It is a comfortable place to enjoy creative craft beers that are not the norm for San Diego County. I mean that in a good way. Sure, they brew a tasty IPA, but they also produce other styles, some traditional and some experimental.
Arcana Brewing’s beers are worth traveling for.
