Benchmark Brewing Company- San Diego
Benchmark Brewing is like a geode. It’s plain on the outside, but inside it’s a gorgeous, sparkling cavern specially designed for brewing and enjoying craft beer. They have art on the wall from local artists, enlarged topographic maps of San Diego and the back country covering walls, and comfy picnic benches that remind me of San Diego County parks.
Benchmark won a Gold Medal at this year’s Great American Beer Festival for their Oatmeal Stout, which is made obvious when you drink it. Their stout is an archetype of the style.
On the day I visited, I was there for their Hop Chunks Imperial IPA, on cask. Here is my impression of the brew:
Light amber color, clear, small white cask-head; delicate veil of lacing with proper retention. Classic citrus and resinous aroma, flavor, and bitterness from the hop load (pine and grapefruit mostly, with a hint of tangy tangerine). Fine carbonation, well-bodied creaminess, with lemon/tangerine, crisp finish. Overall, a very balanced Imperial IPA. 8.5% ABV. This brew would go great with turkey this week!
