Bolt Brewery- La Mesa

For the past few months I have driven by Bolt Brewery at least once a week to check out their construction progress, and yesterday I was finally able to visit. They had four of their craft brews available for tasting, and although they were all drinkable, I liked the Citra Pale Ale the best, so here is my impression of it:

Crystal clear amber color, white head, nice lacing.  Citrusy, spicy, and tropical flavors and aromas from Citra hops are forward balanced with a low malt base to support their presentation.  Crisp, clean finish with a nice amount of bitterness.  A classic example of the American Pale Ale style.  45 IBUs, 5.2 ABV.  Very refreshing in the shade of Bolt’s huge eucalyptus tree neighbor.  This brew, like all APAs, would pair well with just about any food, especially smoky and sharp cheeses, and grilled meats.

By the way, the tasting area is actually outside on Bolt’s beautifully designed and landscaped patio. The brew house equipment and system inside the restored Quonset hut building are gorgeous. There you will see the copper kettle and mash tun which have an interesting history and story that you must ask about when you visit. Staff at Bolt Brewery are friendly, attentive, and strive to provide good customer service.  Cheers!
