Half Door Brewing Company- San Diego (Downtown)
I like how Half Door Brewing describes itself as “a ‘pub’ in the traditional Irish countryside sense of the word- a place where beer is made and served fresh.” I also like that they are pairing their house-brewed beers with “comfort food.” Just look at their menu for a few examples:
Hoban House IPA with Sausage Flatbread | Applewood smoked bacon, onion marmalade, burratta cheese, house sausage
Half Door Pale Ale with Fish N’ Chips | Coleman’s Stout battered Alaskan Cod, malt vinegar chips, jalepeño tartar sauce, kaffir lime slaw
Half Door Amber Ale with Pork Belly Hash | Breakfast potatoes, poached eggs, caramelized onions, rosemary hollandaise
So if you like craft beer, if you like comfort food flavors with an Irish twist, and like me, you like to explore beer and food pairings, this could be the place for you.
Here are my tasting notes for Half Door Pale Ale 5.6% ABV/∼40 IBUs:
Clear dark copper, visible bubble streams, adequate white head, feathery lace. Aromas of grapefruit, pine, and mint. First taste is juicy, citrusy and appetizingly bitter; as it warmed I also tasted subtle toasty and earthy flavors. Medium bodied with cheery carbonation. Finishes clean with lovely, lingering bitterness.
Being at Half Door was like being in someone’s house, in that the place really is comfortable, warm, and inviting like a traditional pub in the Irish countryside. Except there is a brewhouse in one of the rooms upstairs! And a major league baseball stadium down the block!
