Helm’s Brewing Company- San Diego

This review was updated on December 21st, 2014 after I returned with a refreshed and better educated palate. When I visited the brewery last month the brews I tasted seemed lackluster which I assumed was due to a problem with my taste buds. This time I only tasted the Beeruccino Coffee Porter with Pepper, 7.2% ABV. Here is my impression of it:

Ebony opaque color with sparse off-white head. Mild coffee, vanilla, and caramel aromas; flavors are weakly similar. Supposed to have pepper notes somewhere but I never found them. Not much carbonation. Smooth on the palate, mellow bitterness, thin mouthfeel like a stale, cold cup of coffee. Not as robust as I prefer my Porters to be.

Here is my previous review:

Helm’s is a handsome looking microbrewery, and the service was fine. I tried four of their dark beers, though I’m not going to rate them since I think my palate must have been off. I’ll go back another day to try some beers recommended by Beertrotter.com.
