About: Midnight Jack Brewing soft-opened on March 25th of this year with four craft beers and a promise that more were on the way. The brewery kept that promise, for when I visited recently, there were 14 beers, three of which were on nitro.
Named for founder/brewer John “Jack” Scheri’s grandfather, a part-time New Jersey bootlegger, brewing at Midnight Jack is done on a 15-barrel, direct-fire system to make both lagers and ales. Beer styles currently available include pale ales, IPAs, stouts, and browns. Jack’s award-winning Lucky No. 7 IPA tops the current list.
The design of the tasting room is state-of-the-art light industrial with a trendy color palate and wood accents. Its theme is reminiscent of Prohibition days. There is a long, poured-in-place concrete bar and new wood picnic benches to sit at and a large area for games like giant Jenga and Cornhole.
A shiny stainless steel brewing system is in full view of the tasting room. Despite the industrial look to the brewery, the vibe is cool and relaxed. Service from staff is excellent.
What I Drank: I ordered three beers to try, all 4 ounce tasters:
Bombshell Belgian Blonde (7.2%)- flavorful, rich, and crisp, with subtle aromas; it has a slightly sweet and grainy malt character, medium body, and creamy mouthfeel. I really like the citrusy and spicy aroma, clean flavors, and complexity of this delicious, drinkable beer.
Midnight Jack Pale Ale (5.5%)- beautiful amber color with an off-white foam head, this beer has a mild citrusy and biscuity aroma with flavors to match, well-balanced, with a clean, crisp finish. Very refreshing.
Barnstormer Brown (5.8%) on nitro- dark brown color with a creamy white head, aroma is toasty, nutty, and slightly chocolaty; flavor is similar, though nicely bitter; mouthfeel is full with medium carbonation. Flavorful and refreshing.
Likes: The open, bright, airy feeling of the well-designed, modern tasting room. Having the brewing system as part of the tasting room is a plus. Welcoming, attentive, and friendly staff provided good service with a smile. Clean restrooms. Lots of parking.
The Verdict: Highly recommended. A new craft brewery producing well-made beers to satisfy any beer-lover’s tastes. Beers and service were excellent and well worth traveling for.
