Oggi’s Pizza & Brewing Company- San Diego (Mission Valley)

Oggi’s Pizza & Brewing Mission Valley is number 71 on West Coaster’s list of San Diego County breweries. It’s also number 71 for the breweries I have visited in San Diego County.

Oggi’s is one of three craft brewpubs in Mission Valley. Located in Fenton Marketplace at the east end of Mission Valley, it’s close to Qualcomm Stadium. It’s primarily a sports bar that serves house-brewed beers and freshly made pizzas and burgers. Flat-screen TVs are everywhere.

Service is good at Oggi’s. Patrons are greeted warmly and seated quickly. Wait staff are attentive, speedy, and anticipate customers’ needs. Their menu is full of tasty dishes and flagship brews are available year round.

I went to Oggi’s to taste craft beer, but I was also craving pizza. Margherita Classico, my favorite pizza style because of its thin crust, is one of the specialty pizzas on their menu. I paired it with Oggi’s California Gold (4.5 ABV/13.9 IBUs), which they describe as a “California Blonde Ale.”

Their description also calls this beer a “cream ale,” which is confusing to me. Cream Ale and Blonde Ale are separate sub-categories according to BJCP Style Guidelines. After reviewing the guidelines, I think this brew is an American Blonde, not an American-Style Cream Ale. Whatever the style, here’s the summary of my tasting notes for Oggi’s California Gold:

Faint spicy, floral, and citrus aromas rise from the glass that contains the color of golden leaves in autumn. Warm notes of grain combine with sweet flavors on the palate. With a light body and low bitter finish, this Blonde won’t be suitable for hop hunters. But if you’re looking for a way to capture California summer days in a glass, this is it. Crisp, clean, and refreshing, it paired well with my pizza laced with fresh tomato and basil.
