Pizza Port Bressi Ranch- Carlsbad
Pizza Port Bressi Ranch sparkles with newness. It is Pizza Port Brewing Company’s newest member of the family, opened less than two years ago. Like the other Pizza Port brewpubs, Bressi Ranch cranks out fresh craft brews and artisanal pizzas in a fun, family friendly environment. But there are two unique features here: at this location they pump their beers into cans for distribution, and this is where they make ice cream for all their restaurants.
Last year Pizza Port Bressi Ranch won a Silver Award at the World Beer Cup for their Shark Bite Red, which I was honored to hold.
One of my “sub-quests” to my quest to visit every craft brewery in San Diego County is to taste all of the county’s 2014 award winners at World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival. Unfortunately, when I visited Pizza Port Bressi Ranch they were out of Shark Bite, so at the bartender’s recommendation I tasted a pint of Kook DIPA, 8.5% ABV, instead. Here is a summary of my tasting notes:
Golden bronze with a snow-white head, good retention, and sticky lace. Big burst of jasmine, grapefruit, melon, and vanilla aromas. Fresh bitter taste, lots of pucker power and astringency at first, but medium malt sweetness quickly calms them and the floral, fruity, evergreen flavors become evident. Flavors increase as it warms. Medium-high body, lively carbonation, the aftertaste is crisp, clean, and pleasantly bitter.
Overall, this is a well crafted DIPA that showcases the hops. Exemplar of the style, it’s quite enjoyable. Due to the intense hop bitterness and big flavors I would pair this brew with food that is just as intense, such as grilled, flavorful meats with dense sauces, barbecued pork chops wrapped in bacon, or a Pizza Port pizza loaded with sausages.
