Rough Draft Brewing Company- San Diego (Mira Mesa)
I remember visiting Rough Draft Brewing three years back when they had just opened. The brewhouse and tasting area were functional, but the space was still a little Spartan inside; not like it is now. When I walked in the other day I was pleased to see that the interior had been trimmed out, front to back. It was comfortable and cozy with a sofa, nice chairs, and decorated with indoor plants– like being in someone’s living room. Quite inviting for a craft brewery.
I love being greeted warmly when I walk into a brewery, and Rough Draft definitely has that part down. One of the tasting room servers provided me with excellent customer service and educated me on their current selection of fresh brews. Although there were numerous beers that looked really interesting, I decided on the bourbon barrel-aged Emboozlement Tripel, 9%/25 IBUs. Here is my experience tasting it:
Bright copper color; clear and bright, with a snowy white, frothy head that settles quickly into a white ring in the snifter. There’s a pleasant, soft bourbon aroma, with a hint of herbs and spice. Flavors are caramel, bourbon, chardonnay, and ginger spice. As it warms classic sweetness of the style emerges. Mouthfeel is creamy, slick, and nicely carbonated, with a clean, sweet, slightly bitter aftertaste. Overall, this is a delicious San Diego style Tripel that hides the alcohol well. It’s a sipping beer that would be great to enjoy by the fire or with the right foods.
Food pairings: any of the Blue cheeses or sharp cheddars; roasted pork or chicken; pasta dishes with lots of basil; Mediterranean pizzas; and Thai cuisine would go well with this beer.
