URBN St. Brewing Co. Pizza and Medal-Winning Beers
Name: URBN St. Brewing Company
Where: 110 South Magnolia Avenue El Cajon, California 92020
Cost: Craft Pizzas $14.00-$29.00 | Craft Beers $5.00-$7.00
About: URBN St. Brewing took over where El Cajon Brewing left off when the latter went out of business just over two years ago. Founded during the summer of 2013 by Chef Alex Carballo (of Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens fame), Jon Mangini (SoCal Restaurateur), and Callaway Ryan (head brewer), URBN St. Brewing features a food menu of appetizers, salads, craft pizzas, and desserts in addition to craft beers.
The craft beer selection at URBN St. is phenomenal. They pour 40+ beers on draft, consisting of four of their own fresh core and six seasonal brews, and 30+ regional and local beers. Click here for a current list of their guest beers.
Craft pizzas at the restaurant are amazing. Creations include pizzas such as Fresh Pesto Chicken, Gouda Garlic Alfredo, and even a Vegan. Click here to read the entire list of pizzas. Smaller size pizzas at URBN St. would be a large pizza at any other restaurant.
What I ate: URBN Barbeque Chicken, a “Red pie with mozzarella, bacon, scallions, Brown Ale BBQ sauce, and parmesan.” -from URBN St. menu
This pizza had a crisp crust with perfectly charred edges and fresh ingredients. When a wedge was pulled up strings of melted mozzarella stretched all the way from pan to plate. Biting into this masterpiece was heavenly. Toppings were balanced with the crust, and I loved the tangy BBQ sauce made from URBN St. Brown ale.
What I drank: Because it recently won a Bronze Medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival I paired my pizza with URBN St. Saison (6.9% ABV/42 IBUs). My tasting notes:
Pale orange-gold color, hazy, with firm, white head that leaves a dry Belgian lace on the glass. Aroma is pleasing, like lemons, dried apricots, pepper, coriander, and grass. Flavor is similar to elements of the aroma: fruit and spice. Moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with effervescent carbonation; finish is dry and clean.
Overall, this is a delicious, refreshing Saison; classically balanced towards the fruit, spice, and hop characteristics. It was the perfect choice for pairing with my pizza, as it was robust enough to stand up to the full flavors of the pizza. Its effervescence and hop bitterness made it an awesome palate cleanser between bites.
Likes: URBN St. Brewing is a well-run restaurant. They serve high-quality food and high-quality craft beers (their own and others), customer service is excellent, and the trendy environment is clean and inviting. I like how you can see the pizza oven and pizza prep area, as well as the brewhouse, from the bar and main part of the restaurant. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable about their food and beer, and attentive at all times.
I also like that URBN St. gives back to the community. Head Brewer Callaway Ryan, for example, gives back by partnering with BraveCort Foundation, which works to fight childhood brain cancer.
The Verdict: Recommended. URBN St. is a wonderful restaurant, fronted by Chef Alex Carballo, one of the most talented chefs in San Diego. Fresh craft brews made by Head Brewer Callaway Ryan are always available for pairing with artisanal pizzas. This was the third time I have visited URBN St. and like previous visits, this one was enjoyable and I will return.Share This:
