Backstreet Brewery- Vista

Backstreet Brewery and Lamppost Pizza are two parts that make a whole brewpub in the Vista Village Mall. The pair, opened in 2004, is the second link in the chain of 8 Southern Cal Backstreet Brewery/Lamppost Pizza brewpubs that originally started in Irvine in 1998.

Locals like the place for its fresh beers, pizza and pub dishes, but Bloody Marys are also popular here. They serve other cocktails, as well.

Walking in the door to the brewery you’ll notice the beautiful bar, and then the spacious patio outside to the left. To the right is a door that leads to the pizza restaurant side of the house.

Beyond the bar is the stunning brewing system, part of which is upstairs, while the other part is downstairs. As a homebrewer I really liked the brewing system design and layout. Upstairs you’ll see the mill, copper mash tun, copper kettle, and stainless fermenters. Downstairs, within view of the bar, are the shiny stainless serving tanks.

In addition to the brewing system, another thing I liked is how Backstreet brews small batches of both “mainstay beers” and a changing variety of “brewmaster’s choice” beers on premise. I tasted one of the latter, Dave’s Daily Pils (5.2% ABV/41 IBU). My tasting notes:

Dave’s Daily Pils

Straw gold color, brilliantly clear, with a firm white head. Aroma is slightly floral, spicy, and a little earthy. Flavor is hop balanced although there is a hint of light malt. Mouthfeel is thinner than I like, moderately effervescent carbonation, slightly astringent, with a dry finish. Overall, this is a crisp, hoppy, drinkable German-style Pilsner.

Note: water in Vista is known to be extremely hard, which makes it difficult to make a Pilsner. Kudos to the brewer for producing this tasty Pilsner.

Pairing Suggestions: Lamppost Pizza!
