Callahan’s Pub & Brewery- San Diego (Mira Mesa)
Located on Mira Mesa Boulevard in the heart of the community of Mira Mesa, Callahan’s Pub & Brewery is a lot like its sister brewery, San Diego Brewing Company, except for the Irish Pub theme. On Yelp someone posted: “Callahan’s is the family bar of Mira Mesa. It’s a fun place to go. You will almost always run into someone you know.”
I didn’t run into anyone I knew, but it is a fun place to go. Locals seem to love Callahan’s for their pub food menu and big selection of craft and fresh house beers on tap. Wednesday nights are especially popular as they bring out the hot wings for happy hour.
I was there for lunch and had their beer battered fish and chips, which I paired with their house “El Hefe” Hefeweizen. Here is my impression of it:
Straw color, hazy, with a full, white foam head. Medium-low sweet nutmeg and fruit aromas, same pleasant flavors, and light hop bitterness; good balance. Medium-low body, high carbonation, with a smooth refreshing aftertaste. Bartender offered a slice of lemon or orange; none was needed. Flavor of this beer was enjoyable without garnish.
Overall, this is a nice, refreshing Hefeweizen, one that paired well with fish and chips and coleslaw due to the tangy lemon and hop bitterness and high carbonation that cut through the oil the fish was fried in. It would also pair well with chicken, seafood, or pasta dishes, such as a fresh Tomato, Crab, and Avocado Salad, cold-smoked wild Salmon on a bed of arugula, or barbecued shrimp with lemon risotto.
