Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery- La Jolla
Rock Bottom is one of three craft breweries in La Jolla.
Located just west of I-5, Rock Bottom is perched above the intersection of La Jolla Village Drive and Villa La Jolla. UCSD is right across the street. It’s a nice restaurant and the brewery itself is in full view of the bar, and most of the seating elsewhere. The restaurant layout is huge, almost like a labyrinth.
Sitting at the bar I was able to enjoy the view of the brewhouse while watching a March Madness game. Service was excellent from an attentive staff, and I ordered a freshly brewed Hefeweizen to cool off from the heat wave outside. Here’s my impression of it:
Light amber color, cloudy, off-white head and good retention. Pleasant aromas of clove, vanilla, grapes, earth, and citrus blossoms. Flavors are similar to the aromas; sweetness and bitterness are balanced at first, then a little bit of nice bitterness pervades. Medium body, great creaminess, and a crisp, clean finish with refreshing carbonation. Overall, a well-crafted Hefeweizen.
Rock Bottom has an extensive menu with many dishes that would pair well with this Hefeweizen. For my taste buds, I would pair this beer with any kind of sausages, seafood, shellfish, roast chicken, or even a Caesar Salad.
