Resident Brewing Company- San Diego (downtown)

Name: Resident Brewing Company

Where: 1065 Fourth Avenue | San Diego, California

Cost: Pints $6.00-$8.00

About: Resident Brewing Company teamed up with The Local Eatery & Drinking Hole, one of my favorite bars in downtown San Diego, when the latter was remodeled last year. The arrangement is quite unique, in that the brewery and tasting room are operating independently inside the bar/restaurant.

Resident Brewing is inside The Local

Located at the corner of 4th and C, Resident Brewing is the sixth brewery to open in downtown San Diego. It is a welcome addition to the small cluster. The brewery tasting room is at the back of The Local, right beside the 10-barrel brewhouse which faces C Street.

The vibe is just as they describe on the brewery’s website: “Cool, inviting, and relaxed.”

Well known home brewer turned pro, Robert Masterson, is Resident’s head brewer, and although he has been brewing on the new system for just six months, he is already producing some wonderful beers. Elevated pub food may be ordered from The Local’s kitchen to pair with Resident Brewing’s excellent beers.

What I Drank: Golden Kiss Saison (6% ABV). Like golden nectar in a glass, this beer’s aroma and flavor profiles are aligned: earthy, mildly spicy, floral, and fruity. Reminiscent of a stroll in a country meadow, this Saison is nicely balanced, slightly tart, and has a crisp, refreshing, semi-dry finish. Perfect for pairing with The Local’s Chicken Bomb Mi, Chicken Adobada, Green Chicken Enchiladas, or Fiesta Salad.

Likes: It was great to finally taste one of Resident Brewing’s beers and I was not disappointed. Their Saison was well made and true to style. I loved drinking it at The Local, as the ambience is cool and relaxed. Prices are reasonable. Service is excellent.

Dislikes: Parking on the street anywhere near the brewery is scarce, and metered (except on Sundays). Pay parking lots are close by, but expensive. Walk, bike, or use Uber/Lyft/taxis/trolley instead.

The Verdict: Recommended. Resident Brewing Company is a welcome addition to the craft beer brewery scene in downtown San Diego. I love drinking Saisons in the summer, and Golden Kiss is a good one.
