About: The High Dive Bar and Grill is a San Diego original. It is a classic neighborhood bar and restaurant located in Bay Park, across Interstate 5 from Mission Bay. Well-known for amazing craft and tiki-style cocktails, they also serve an array of quality craft beers on draft. In addition to cocktails and beer, they serve mouth-watering elevated pub food, including burgers.
Although they advertise themselves as being one, High Dive Bar and Grill is not really a “dive bar.” Rather, it has a sports-bar vibe that is fun, friendly, social, and casual. Staff clearly enjoy working there and provide excellent customer service to patrons. As soon as you walk in the door one of the bartenders will shout out, “Welcome!” to you. And when you sit down at the bar or one of the many tables, you are provided with fast, friendly, and attentive service.
Inside the High Dive there are colorful light strings and tap handles hanging from the ceiling, flashing pin ball machines in one corner, and HDTVs on every wall showing various sports being broadcasted at the time. The music they play is great. Outside, there is a shady patio cooled by ocean breezes, with big tables to accommodate families and groups.
On the Saturday lunch time I was there, the place was packed with regulars and new comers like me. Everyone was laughing and having a good time.
What I Ate: There are six burger options on the menu, and I went for the Gorgonzola Bacon Burger ($14.00). It is a hefty beef patty, perfectly cooked, topped with gorgonzola cheese, smoked bacon, and caramelized onions. Served alongside the burger is a small mountain of seasoned fries.
A steak knife is stabbed in from the top to hold the burger together. I loved that it was presented this way, but I soon found out why. The only way to properly eat the Gorgonzola Bacon Burger is with the knife and a fork. Oh, and you will need lots of napkins should you order one.
What I Drank: I washed down the burger with a pint of Pilsner (5.6 ABV/40 IBU) from Angel City Brewery. This beer is a traditional European-style Pilsner, medium-bodied, with a clean and dry finish. Very refreshing, it paired well with the burger.
Likes: The burger and fries were wonderful, as was the beer. I like the range of craft beers available at the bar. Service is outstanding: super friendly and welcoming. Plenty of TVs showing sports, and great background music. They are kid friendly with a pin ball room and a kids menu. Amazing breakfast dishes like Moco Loco and Chilaquiles are served on the weekend.
The Verdict: Highly recommended. The High Dive Bar and Grill is a great place for quality pub food (especially hamburgers) and craft beers. Conveniently located in Bay Park close to Sea World, Fiesta Island, and Mission Bay parks.
