Coronado Brewing Company’s production facility and tasting room in the Bay Park neighborhood of San Diego is awesome. As a craft beer lover, I highly recommend you pay the location a visit. Today I had a nice experience there, watching the brewing team brew and bottle beer while I tasted one of their special releases.

The Monkey Island Imperial Schwarzbier is a collaboration brew with one of my other favorite San Diego microbreweries, Monkey Paw. If you have never had a Schwarzbier, you must try the it, as I think this is a good example of the style. At least it tastes delicious.

Schwarzbiers were developed in the 16th century in German regions, and they are still being brewed to this day. Here is my rating of this very nice beer:

Monkey Island Imperial Schwarzbier

Black color with a creamy, white head.  Excellent, sticky lacing.  Fruity malt aromas with hints of chocolate and roasted coffee.  Silky smooth mouthfeel with lager yeast character, and well balanced bitter-sweet flavors.  Alcohol apparent.  Finishes crisp and clean, leaving us wanting more.  60 IBUs, 8.5% ABV.
