San Marcos Brewery & Grill- San Marcos
Just off Highway 78 (the Hops Highway) on San Marcos Boulevard you’ll find San Marcos Brewery & Grill. Located at the front of Old California Restaurant Row, it’s known locally as a brewpub with good food and good beer.
Actually, in my opinion, San Marcos Brewery & Grill is more of a restaurant that makes beer than a brewery that makes food. Nonetheless, in addition to its good food and beer, the place has excellent service. My server was welcoming, friendly, and attentive during my entire visit; key ingredients when I beer tour.
I was craving Fish and Chips the day I was there. I have always had good luck pairing this dish with a Hefeweizen, so of course that’s what I ordered along with the food. Incidentally, San Marcos Brewery & Grill offers 7 other house-brewed beers, in addition to guest craft beers from surrounding breweries.
Here is a summary of my tasting notes for their German style Hefeweizen (6.0% ABV):
Served in a proper Weizen Glass (without a lemon, thank you!), this beer is straw in color, classically cloudy, with a fluffy white head that sticks to the glass. It has low-level aromas of spice, clove, vanilla, and banana. There are subtle flavors of wheat, and malt sweetness and bitterness are also subdued. Palate is medium bodied, pleasantly creamy, with bright carbonation and a smooth, clean finish. Overall, this is a delicious south German Hefeweizen, true to the style.
Salads- crab salad, watermelon and tomato salad, arugula with avocado and goat cheese salad
Cheeses- any of the tangy types, such as goat, Feta and Edam
Entrees- chicken, grilled salmon, baked white fish, lobster, grilled shrimp, and Fish and Chips!
Dessert- short cake with berries, Bananas Foster, banana pudding, fruit cocktails
