About: For the founders, Wiseguy Brewing Company is a dream come true brewery in Carlsbad. As they say on their website, “What started out as a hobby, quickly turned into a passion and has now become a company.”

The brewery is owned and operated by head brewer Brett Gent and his father, Tom. Their menu has been designed to please discriminating beer palates and includes German classics like Pilsner, Altbier, Doppelbock, and Vienna Lager. They also brew a Pale Ale, IPA, Irish Stout, and ESB.

Wiseguy Brewing, situated in Carlsbad Corporate Center near McClellan- Palomar Airport, has a beautiful tasting room, with an elegant color palate. It is a welcoming place to enjoy some fine, brewery-fresh beers after work or on the weekends. It has a popcorn cart, TVs, and board games to enjoy while hanging out.

Feel the love at this brewery. Dogs and kids are welcome.

What I Drank: Jimalter (5.6% ABV/39 IBU), a German Altbier. “Alt” means “old” as in the old way of brewing–before cold-fermented lager beers were developed. According to Garrett Oliver, Altbier is a “unique beer style because it requires an unorthodox, ‘cool’ fermentation by a specialty yeast that works best in a temperature range between 55°F and 66°F.”

From my tasting notes:

Jimalter is copper-brown in color with a white head. It has a pleasant, malty and grainy aroma with floral notes. The flavor profile is malty, fruity, floral, and bittersweet. Well-balanced. It is medium-bodied with medium carbonation, smooth, crisp, and clean-tasting. I like the mellow, malty/nutty finish.

Likes: Delicious, well-made beers, including styles that are hard to find in San Diego County. The Altbier I drank was true to style. Reasonable prices. Excellent, friendly service. Plenty of parking. Clean restroom.

Dislikes: none

Verdict: Wiseguy Brewing is a beautiful new brewery in North County San Diego. They are producing tasty, hard to make beers that are unique to the region. I’m serious when I say you can feel the love here. Highly recommended.
