About: According to “Dr.” Bill Sysak, craft beer expert and Ambassador for Stone Brewing Company, Mikkeller Brewing instantly became “one of the top 10 breweries in San Diego” when they opened their doors last month.

After ten years of brewing great beers as a “gypsy brewery” Mikkeller finally established a permanent “official” brewery. The new brewery is a partnership with AleSmith Brewing, another top brewery in San Diego.

Bill Batten, former master brewer for AleSmith, has moved over to Mikkeller as head brewer and is producing beers previously created by Mikkeller. Beer Geek Breakfast (7.5% ABV), an experimental beer developed in 2006, is one such beer. Newly developed beers are also being brewed by Batten.

Mikkeller Brewing originated in Copenhagen, Denmark. Two gifted homebrewers, Mikkel Bjersø and Kristian Keller, founded the microbrewery in 2006. Mikkeller quickly gained a reputation among craft beer enthusiasts worldwide for brewing experimental one-off beers with intense new tastes. Some of Mikkeller’s beers are considered to be the best in the world.

By taking over AleSmith Brewing’s former brewery, Mikkeller will be able to constantly create new beer recipes and tastes.

What I Drank: I tasted through three freshly brewed beers during my visit: Berliner Weisse (3.2% ABV); California Dream (4.2% ABV), a Pilsner with blood orange; and Ny Verden (9.0% ABV), an Olde Ale. All three beers were well made, flavorful, and delicious. Each one had a clean finish, and after drinking the last drop, my palate longed for more. These beers were amazing.
