About: Located in San Diego’s East Village neighborhood on Market Street between 8th and 9th, Knotty Brewing is owned and operated by Knotty Barrel Gastropub, which is right next door.

According to Ken Lovi, President of the Knotty Barrel partnership, who has been owning and operating restaurants in San Diego for over 20 years, the gastropub team has always been passionate about beer. So, along with the restaurant expansion which was recently completed, they decided to to get into the brewery business, and Knotty Brewing was born. Knotty Brewing is the seventh craft brewery to open in downtown San Diego.

Open the big red door and step inside the cozy tasting room of the 5-barrel brewery. It is a small room, but there is plenty of seating inside on comfortable bar stools. Plus, there are bar stools for sitting outside on the little patio when the weather is nice.

Thick slabs of finished wood make up the tasting room’s bar top and table tops. Knotty wood planking warmly accents the front wall, inside and out, framing the big window that opens to the sidewalk. One of the side walls has been stripped to expose red brick of the original building.

Repurposed industrial light fixtures circa 1940s hang from the ceiling, and mounted up high in one corner is a Plasma/HDTV for watching sports. Speaking of sports, Knotty Brewing is just three blocks from Petco Park.

The vibe is fun, relaxing, and unpretentious at Knotty Brewing. If you are lucky, Head Brewer Donovan Lane will be available to talk about his beers. Donovan is a cheerful man who loves to brew beer. He used to be Head Brewer at Funky Bow Brewery & Beer Company in the woods of Lyman, Maine, before he was coaxed out west to brew for Knotty Brewing.

What I Drank: I ordered a flight of four beers and liked them all. Super Fresh Pale Ale (5.2% ABV), a malt-forward British-style pale ale, was my favorite. It has a malty and hoppy aroma and flavor, with a hint of dried dark fruit. I like the body and clean finish. This beer makes your mouth feel good. It is perfect for pairing with any of Knotty Barrel’s burgers.

Likes: Super Fresh Pale Ale was outstanding. Beers at the brewery are reasonably priced. The new tasting room is well done and service is excellent– professional, efficient, and courteous.

Dislikes: It is difficult to find parking near the brewery. It is better to walk, bike, take a taxi cab, Uber, or Lyft to visit the brewery. Beware of the parking lot right next to the brewery. The fee for parking there is extremely high.

The Verdict: There is an authentic flair and passion for craft beer on display at Knotty Brewing. The beers are well made and delicious. I look forward to returning. Recommended.
