Mission Brewery- San Diego (downtown)
Mission Brewery is located inside the old Wonder Bread Building in the East Village neighborhood of San Diego, a short walk from Petco Park.
The tasting room has a commanding view of the brew house and the historic interior’s brick walls, high ceilings, wood trusses, and original bread factory features. Ambiance and the weather put me in the mood for one of Mission’s seasonal brews, so I went for their Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Seas, 11% ABV and 75 IBUs.
To create this beer Mission puts their Dark Seas Russian Imperial Stout, which is already delicious, into bourbon barrels for a few months and out comes this amplified seasonal brew. Here is my opinion of it:
Served in a big snifter, it was dark chocolate-brown in color with a modest tan head. Due to the alcohol level there wasn’t much lacing, which was to be expected. Nice bourbon aroma at first sniff, but as it warmed I smelled roasted grains, coffee, vanilla, chocolate, and dried dark fruits. It has a low hop bitterness, some sweetness, a silky mouth feel and warming finish. Overall, a quality brew to be enjoyed by a cozy fire on a rainy night. I would pair it with chocolate, of course, or smoked meats and cheeses. Cheers!
