AleSmith Brewing Company- San Diego (Miramar District)
My visit to AleSmith yesterday was pleasant. I got there 15 minutes after they opened and there was already a small crowd in the tasting room. The brew house was busy packaging, and with the good cheer and winter holiday decorations it was like being in a mini version of Santa’s workshop in the tasting room. Despite being busy, staff was attentive and provided everyone with great service. I plan to go back soon to taste their other award winners.
I went to AleSmith to taste Old Numbskull, the 2013 and 2014 Gold Medal winner for American Barleywine at the Great American Beer Festival. Old Numbskull has also won medals in previous years at the World Beer Cup. Here is my humble review of this fine brew:
Beautiful clear, amber/ruby color, fizzy white head, good lacing. Aromas and flavors suggest chocolate, coffee, caramel, and toffee. Balanced malt sweetness and earthy bitterness. Mouthfeel is smooth and silky with gentle carbonation. Aftertaste retains the flavor characteristics making this brew very easy to drink, so remember the 11% ABV. I love English and American Barleywines, and Old Numbskull is a great one.
AleSmith suggests pairing this beer with “roasted meats, braises, and stews or bold, decadent offerings such as sausages, paté, and a variety of pungent cheeses.” Cheers!Share This:
